Periods, headers, and footers

It would be great if they could identify headers and footers so that the body of the text is not interrupted by reading the headers and footers between each page. Even more frustrating is their inability to distinguish between a period at the end of a sentence and its use is initials, abbreviations, or numbers. A numbered paragraph "4.2.1 History... is read as "4(pause)2(pause)1 History". "i.e." is read as "i(pause)e(pause)" and "vs." Is actually read as "versus(pause)". This can make the narrative very hard to follow.
